KOLD: The Truth Behind the Tales
KOLD: The Truth Behind the Tales
KOLD: The Truth Behind the Tales reimagines the fairy tales we were raised to believe—and asks what happens when Black girls finally get to tell the story.
In a world where happily-ever-after was never written with them in mind, a group of girls journey through the cold realities hidden beneath the stories society tells about womanhood, beauty, love, family, education, survival, and worth. Along the way, they confront domestic violence, racism, mental health, generational trauma, educational inequity, and the systems that have too often asked Black girls to survive what they should have been protected from.
But KOLD is not simply a story about what has wounded us.
It is a story about what happens when we awaken.
Blending storytelling, movement, history, testimony, and the magic of the fairy-tale tradition, KOLD: The Truth Behind the Tales transforms familiar ideas of princesses, villains, spells, and fairy godmothers into a powerful exploration of Black girlhood and Black womanhood.
Because sometimes the spell must be broken.
Sometimes the princess saves herself.
And sometimes, before we can write a new ending, we have to tell the truth about the tale.
Black girls deserve fairy tales, too.
